Energie-Cités Board of Directors,

The Swedish town of Växjö, a member of the Energie-Cités Board of Directors, won the first prize in the “sustainable community” category of the “Sustainable Energy Europe” Campaign Competition. Known as the “Fossil Fuel Free” town, Växjö had already received a national prize of excellence in 2000.

”Fossil Fuel Free Växjö” is an ambitious programme involving all municipal services and companies as well as many local players in the fight against climate change. It started in 1996 when the Town Council decided to progressively stop using fossil fuels and to halve its greenhouse gas emissions by 2010.

In 2006, more than half of the city’s energy requirements were satisfied by renewable resources and CO2 emissions had been reduced by 25% over ten years! Proof that a strong political drive shared by all the players involved always bears fruit. Växjö is also one of the sixteen examples of innovative European communities illustrated in the “Beacon regions, cities, neighbourhoods…” exhibition.
